Intel has launched a new 64-layer solid state drive available for less than $200 at most outlets.

Intel claims this is the world’s first commercially available SSD using 64-layer 3D NAND FLASH, and is only shipping with a 512 GB capacity, for now anyway.

The new SSD features a 6 Gbit/s SATA interface and its 4K block read/write IOPS are up to 82,500, about the same as the existing client SSD 540s series products.

The sequential read/write bandwidth of 128K blocks is up to about 525 MB per second, again equivalent to the 540s SSDs.

This 2.5-inch notebook/desktop disk drive replacement product has a 1.6 million hours MTBF rating, a five-year limited warranty, and also features AES 256-bit encryption technology.

The 545s will have additional capacity variants added, starting at 128 GB and extending upwards to 2 TB, effectively replacing Intel’s current 540s series client SSD range with its 120 GB to 1 TB range.

M.2 form factor product will be coming soon as well. Intel’s Rob Crooke, general manager of its non-volatile memory solutions group, asserted-- “This next generation of process leadership will enable a smooth, easy migration and a new validation cycle for our existing data centre customers from today’s 32-layer products to 64-layer extensions. It also enables an expanded product portfolio that supports new business client and embedded products.”

We expect Intel's partner Micron to bring out SSDs using the 64-layer NAND chips in as well, fairly soon.

According to various reports from the blogosphere, there's apparently a firmware bug that needs fixing. We'll keep you in the loop.
