We learned today that Cisco has announced two new all-flash HyperFlex systems with up to a sixfold performance improvement.

To be sure, HyperFlex is Cisco's newer hyper-converged infrastructure appliance (HCIA) offering, based on the SpringPath HALO software, with Cisco's UCS server and Nexus networking components.

These were hybrid flash and disk systems. There are now the HyperFlex 220c and 240c M4 all-flash nodes, both with 40 Gbps networking features.

There can be three or more such nodes integrated into a single system with a pair of UCS 6200 or 6300 Series fabric interconnects.

The systems have Xeon E-2600 v4 CPUs with up to sixteen cores per socket, up to 1.5 TB of DDR4 DRAM, and a 12 Gbps SAS network implementation.

The nodes have a Cisco Virtual Interface Card (VIC) No. 1227 and have vSphere ESXi 6.0 and/or 6.5 software pre-installed, depending on the choice the user makes at the time the system is ordered.

Cisco asserts that-- "With the new HyperFlex All Flash nodes, coupled with third Generation 40 Gbit/s UCS fabric networking, enterprise customers can expect blazing fast performance with up to 6 times IOPS throughput and about 80 to 85 percent reduction in latency."

The Cisco data sheet states-- "The HX-240c and HX-240c M4 all flash nodes can be deployed with various UCS B-Series Blade Servers and C-Series Rack Servers from Cisco to create a hybrid cluster."

There's a chance that some HCIA hardware vendors will quickly move to include all-flash configurations in their product ranges.

You can check out the HX-220c and HX-240c datasheets on the Cisco website. We'll keep you posted.
