It looks like Big Blue has had another new patent application record year in 2016, getting more than 8,000 that were applied for new patents.

IBM asserts today that its researchers and inventors were granted an average of twenty-two patents per day last year, scoring a total of 8,088 patents in all. So yes, 2016 was a record year for the IT giant.

Of those patents, 2,700 were related to artificial intelligence, cognitive computing and cloud computing, IBM commented.

“We are extremely proud of our inventors’ unique contributions to discovery, science and IT technology that are driving progress across business and society, on top of opening up the new era of cognitive business,” said IBM CEO Ginny Rometty.

For example, in its July 2016 filing, IBM had an application for “Training machine learning models for open-domain question answering system”, which relates to machine learning in response to freeform verbal questions posed by humans.

Other brainteasers include “Proactive identification of hotspots in a cloud computing environment,” which is all about finding overall performance and resource bottlenecks in cloud-based systems before they have a significant impact on users.

Another patent was filed for “Security management in a networked computing environment”.

The last one is an optimistic effort to reduce the level of successful phishing attacks through better message filtering.

For its part, Microsoft says it has risen from 10th place to 8th place in the list of top ten patent applications, possibly heralding a slow return to the 3rd place position it held in 2009.

In the chip segment, Intel has also risen from 9th place last year to 6th this year, filing 2,700 patents over the last twelve months.

“While new patent applications aren't the only barometer of innovation in IT today, they are an essential foundation for where and how a company like IBM will innovate and pave the way for breakthroughs, growth and leadership in these markets,” said an IBM statement.
