It looks like Akamai Technologies has improved its existing bot management and security mitigation services with its recent acquisition of the U.S. startup Cyberfend.

The exact terms of the deal announced today were undisclosed for now.

On any given day, credential theft and overall abuse is a significant issue for most online businesses and their customers.

Cyberfend’s technology is mostly designed to reduce security issues caused by compromised user credentials that leak through the cracks and then become public following data security breaches.

Hackers increasingly utilize such stolen and leaked user credentials to log into a wide range of popular internet and mobile services.

Overall, credential-stuffing attacks of this type have severely affected the British National Lottery and online takeaway firm Deliveroo over recent weeks.

“With the introduction of Bot Manager earlier this year, Akamai helped change the way online businesses deal with various bots and other automated agents that visit their websites,” said Stuart Scholly, senior vice president and general manager of internet security at Akamai.

“Today's addition of Cyberfend’s technology is intended to offer our customers an improved manner to identify and stop credential abuse on their websites, benefitting both the online business and its users,” he added.

Through its acquisition of Cyberfend, Akamai plans to extend the overall capabilities of Cyberfend’s Bot Manager application by simply offering online businesses the technology required to effectively distinguish between real customers and attackers, thus limiting hackers’ ability to skirt detection.
