Seagate said earlier today it has tweaked its IronWolf NAS drives to make them stream data faster for longer and added the suffix 'Pro' at the end.

Seagate's new IronWolf drives were unveiled four months ago and came in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10 TB storage capacity options.

The 10 TB drive is a small helium-filled enclosure with seven platters. The others being more traditional, air-filled drives.

As helium is lighter than air and platters spin inside a helium box with less friction, they can be thinner and lighter as well.

Because of this you can pack an extra one or two platters into the standard 3.5-inch device.

An 8 TB IronWolf weighs 780 grams while a 10 TB one with more platters, weighs in at 650 grams.

Like the IronWolf, it spins at 7,200 RPMs and sports a 6 Gbps SATA interface, but it has a five-year warranty instead of the Ironwolf's three-year one.

It can also cope with a 300 TB per year workload. The ordinary Ironwolf can handle 180 TB per year. Another difference is the Ironwolf's one million hours MTBF (mean time between failure) rating versus the Pro's 1.2 million hours.

The IronWolf's maximum sustained data transfer speed is up to 210 MBPS while the Pro is slightly faster, delivering data at up to 214 MBPS, yet the cache is the same.

The new Seagate drives come with 2 years of Seagate's data recovery rescue services and can cope with being slotted into one to sixteen-bay NAS enclosures, whereas the ordinary Ironwolf is rated for one to eight-bay slots.

We don't have a price yet for the Pro, or detailed availability. Expect it to appear in Seagate's distribution channels and websites shortly, however.
