Another airline computer glitch, this time it's British Airways

At the beginning of August, Delta Airlines suffered major computer issues in its ticketing and IT infrastructure system. Just a few weeks ago, it was Southwest Airlines, this time it's British Airways' turn.

Those same issues are piling up in the airline industry and it seems every major airline could be affected.

British Airways has blamed computer glitches for its inability to check in passengers from all over the globe.

The airline apologised profusely after people took to Twitter to bitterly complain of several delays in its system.

One passenger in San Francisco scanned a letter from British Airways' staff blaming “computer system” issues and saying its employees were falling back on traditional manual check in.

The issues seem to have begun about seven hours ago and appear to have hit British Airways' bag drops and check-ins everywhere across the globe.

A BA spokesperson offered a brief statement this morning, saying the airline was checking in customers at Heathrow and Gatwick Airport, although it's taking a lot longer than usual.

The spokesperson didn't answer questions about the direct cause of the IT issues or say what steps the company was taking to fix matters. The Daily Mail reported that the airline promised its IT teams were working as hard as they can to fix the issue.

The airline had rolled out a new check-in system called FLY earlier this year. Overall, FLY was supposed to have been intuitive for its staff and it replaced a legacy check-in system but there are reports of several system crashes, with the BA check-in platform going down four times during this summer alone.

BA's IT system is believed to handle seat allocation, bags, check-in documents such as passports, and various paperwork like visas for visiting countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia and a few others.

Meanwhile, British Airways is still in the process of sending up to 900 IT jobs offshore in an outsourcing decision to Tata Consultancy Services in India...

British Airways is the latest major airline to have been affected by its check-in systems. Judging by all these recent IT system crashes in the airline industry, it appears that these issues are intensifying and becoming more complex in nature.
