Earlier this morning, Microsoft said it is launching a new C# software development kit for its in-beta language parsing API, dubbed LUIS (Language Understanding Intelligent Service).

Not to be confused with other acronyms, LUIS is simply another segment of the chatbot capability that Microsoft is so excited about these days.

To be sure, LUIS is a model-making environment which the software behemoth says helps developers teach existing apps to understand for example: “book tickets to Paris”, “turn on the lights” etc.

Those features are covered by LuisClient-- interactions are handled by the “predict” and “reply” functions. Software developers can also “create handlers for each intent and setup a router using these handlers in order to have it handle the responses instead of doing so within the client application”, Microsoft asserted at GitHub.

But you will need an app first because when you publish the app you get its ID and app key to use LUIS.

The whole concept is to relieve developers of as much effort as possible, with models built for Cortana and Bing doing the hard work.

That's what Microsoft is trying to simplify, with a developer's interface to define both the intent, and set the response parameters.

LUIS (Language Understanding Intelligent Service) includes pre-built entities. The developer then trains the model, and finally publishes it to an HTTP endpoint like JSON for example.

It looks like Microsoft may have spent quite a bit of time and resources developing LUIS in the last few months since we looked into this back in May. It will be interesting to see how the level of interest the development community will be giving to LUIS in the next 5 to 6 months. We'll keep you updated.
