Juniper Networks apparently has some big plans for its upcoming 'OpenContrail' SDN controller.

The network equipment maker would like to see the new device act as a kind of meta-controller for multiple cloud and data centre controllers.

The company has quietly pushed up the first code of what is dubbed “Project Ukai” at Github.

The alpha-level code has two top-line goals: to run global network resource management that gets “translated to local resources” in data centres.

It's second purpose is to better manage global identifiers like route targets and security group IDs as a whole.

The ultimate initiative is to make it simpler for a network manager to drive multi-region cloud environments and on multiple platforms.

An example of this is a content distribution network-- the operator needs to have the same virtual network configuration, network policy, and firewall rules everywhere.

Overall, Ukai is designed to provide automation for that, Juniper asserted the IT community today.

The company's documentation for OpenContrail Global Controller says that without the automation layer, it's burdensome for a system administrator to connect to various servers and virtual machines in multiple regions at any one time.

The effort aims to create a global controller that can support 3,000 read requests a second, 1,000 requests per second for configuration update requests, and handle up to 50 data centres all at the same time.

The current version of Ukai runs on OpenStack releases later than Liberty; Ubuntu 14.04 or higher, and OpenContrail 3.0 or higher. It looks like this could be viewed positively by the IT community. We'll keep you updated.
