Rumors are swirling in the blogosphere today that Cisco is considering a partnership with Nutanix to jointly offer hyper-convergence software to be sold on UCS servers, echoing similar channel partnership deals it has with SimpliVity and a few others.

However, the company has denied it, so we'll see what happens in the next few days.

The last hyper-converged infrastructure appliance (HCIA) news from Cisco was HyperFlex which Cisco supplies as UCS servers loaded with Springpath HALO software.

Cisco invested in Springpath as part of this deal in mid-2015. The networking giant also has a partnership with SimpliVity for its HCIA software, and SimpliVity has sold more than 1,000 systems based in Cisco's UCS servers to more than 200 customers, it claimed this morning.

Asked to comment on the Nutanix deal, a Cisco spokesperson said-- "We don't comment on rumor and speculation." We've all heard that one before...

Nutanix's Chris Morgan offered this comment-- "Nutanix has two strategic OEM partners: Dell and Lenovo. We are very happy with our success and momentum with both partners, and remain fully committed to building these relationships globally."

A second Nutanix spokesperson said-- "We would also like to add that there is no truth to the rumor." Really?

Two no-comments there, one denying that a deal even exists. This is interesting. If the deal is real then it's testimony to the power of server product marketing and the perceived need not to miss out on server-based HCIA sales through missing software.

As Nutanix appears to be the HCIA leader, then both it and Cisco could benefit from Nutanix-flavored UCS HCIA equipment.

If this story is false then the world's population of wasteful rumor and speculation bits has just been increased. We'll keep you posted.
