Super computer manufacturer Cray said today it's now diversifying into the field of analytics with customized higher-end systems that feature high-speed, open-source number-crunching software.

Cray unveiled today its new Urika-GX that encompasses some of the best-known technology due in the second-half of this year.

The Urika-GX comes pre-installed with OpenStack software and the Apache Mesos system for cloud and data-center applications, including Spark and Hadoop for big number-crunching jobs.

The new supercomputer has been pre-tested and integrated with Hortonworks’ Data Platform on Hadoop.

Cray has also built its own high-end graphics engine that wil run in a version of the system software called Urika-GD Graph Discovery appliance.

The firm is saying that this is about ten to one-hundred times faster than competing graphics processing systems, and can run on anything from a single to thousands of CPUs without a hit on performance.

Additionally, the new system is capable of crunching multi-terabyte data sets containing billions of various objects, the company claims.

The software runs on Intel E5-2600 v4 processors with up to forty-eight nodes and 1,728 cores. There’s 35 TB of PCIe SSD on-node storage and the Aries high-speed interconnect system from Intel that started with Cray’s XC-30 super computer about three years ago.

Also included is 22 TB of RAM memory. Various systems are available in three basic configurations: 16, 32 and 48 nodes with a 42U standard rack.

Cray said the new system brings the capabilities of one of its supercomputers with the convenience of an appliance with x86 hardware and open source software.

The new Urika-GX systems can be used by customers in life sciences, healthcare, and cyber security for high-frequency insights, Cray added. Pricing isn't available yet.
