This morning, the U.S. Secretary of Defense has ordered all Department of Defense (DoD) agencies to move over four million Microsoft-based notebook and mobile devices on Windows 10 by Dec. 31, 2016.

It added that it will also install Windows 10 on millions of computers, tablets and mobile handsets by February of next year, according to Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Windows and Devices Group.

Mehdi said-- "This is an unprecedented move for the DoD and the largest enterprise deployment of Windows 10 to date."

According to Mehdi, the U.S. DoD spends approximately $44 billion per year on cybersecurity and information technology.

The department is clearly keen to move its personnel on Windows 10 as soon as possible, it would appear.

Terry Halvorsen, CIO for the DoD, issued a memo to combatant commands, services agencies and field activities in November 2015 "to rapidly transition onto Microsoft Windows 10 in order to improve our cyber security posture, lower the cost of IT, and streamline the whole operating environment."

Back in 2012, the department inked a three-year enterprise license agreement with Microsoft worth $617 million, giving its two-million-plus civilian and military staff access to Windows 8, Office 2013 and SharePoint 2013.
