Here's a statistic that you probably expected: market research firm Gartner says that PC sales ended 2015 on a lower note. Nothing surprising with that, it's pretty much what most expected.

Gartner said that Q4-2015 saw about 71,889,000 PCs fly off assembly lines around the world, about a 10.6 percent decrease compared to the same quarter in 2014.

Gartner's lower numbers are similarly grim-- 75.7 million shipped for the quarter, down 8.3 percent on Q4 2014's number.

As the numbers reveal, only one PC-maker has something to smile about and it's technically not a PC-maker: Apple clocked up 6.2 percent growth according to IDC and 5.8 percent according to Gartner.

None of the other top five vendors managed any growth, with Lenovo the least worse by keeping a “3” in front of its sales decline.

Overall, it's probably safe to say that Windows and Android can claim more devices in total each year, but needless to say, Apple clearly has a huge market.

IDC says that Windows 10's arrival in the business segment should help overall sales to pick up, as should upgrades made by some consumers who've been putting it off for a while.

With all this said, Gartner still sees “potential for a soft recovery in late 2016”, with Windows 10 for the business segment again a likely driver.

Both market analysts say that Christmas hardly moved the PC sales needle, with Gartner suggesting wearables were the hot item under the tree for 2015.
