Samsung said earlier today that it's now offering a pair of powerful 2 TB solid-state drives (SSDs) designed specifically
for the consumer market.
The electronics behemoth said its 850 PRO and EVO SSDs offer 2 TB of storage capacity in a
2.5 inch standard HD enclosure.
Each SSD contains thirty-two 128 Gb Samsung V-NAND chips as well as four 4 GB DRAM chips, Samsung added.
The South Korean company has long touted the 3D V-NAND chips as a more scalable and power-efficient
alternative to previous flash storage solutions.
A 2 TB storage capacity had been previously reported as possible, should users ask for one. Samsung
said that users had clamored for more storage space in the EVO and PRO SSD lines for over a year already.
"Samsung experienced a surge in demand for 500 gigabyte (GB) and higher capacity SSDs with the
introduction of our V-NAND SSDs," said Samsung's memory vice president of branded product marketing
"The release of these 2 TB solid state drives is a strong driver into the era of multi-terabyte
SSD solutions," he added.
The 2 TB 850 PRO costs $999 and carries a 10-year, 300 TB-written warranty. The 2 TB 850 EVO features
a $799 price tag and offers a 5-year, 150 TB-written warranty.
Both drives are now on sale, although at the time of this article, we couldn't find anyone selling
The 2 TB SSDs join Samsung's line of 120 GB, 250 GB, 500 GB and 1 TB 850 EVO and PRO devices. Samsung
says the 2 TB EVO and PRO models have the same speeds and feeds as their 1 TB counterparts:
2 TB 850 EVO -- 540MB/s sequential read, 520MB/s sequential write, 98,000 random read IOPS (4K),
90,000 random write IOPS (4K)
2 TB 850 PRO -- 550MB/s sequential read, 520MB/s sequential write, 100,000 random read IOPS (4K), 90,000
random write IOPS (4K)
In total, Samsung says it now offers fully twenty different SSD models. The news comes nearly seven
months after Samsung unleashed its 1 TB 850 EVO drives on the market. At the time, we found the drive to be
a solid option for those seeking a low-cost SSD option.
